Wilson Sims, Jr., Partner and Founder of Sims & Steele Consulting, specializes in capital campaigns, major gifts, strategic planning, board development, and facilitation.He has worked with non-profits for 35 years, beginning as an intern and rising to development director and later, consultant to non-profit organizations. Best known for designing and directing over 85 successful capital campaigns raising more than $200 million, the major focus of Wilson’s work has been helping his non-profit clients grow and thrive!
Wilson established Sims & Steele Consulting in Asheville in 1994 so that regional non-profits would have access to strong, experienced, and local consulting at competitive rates. Wilson emphasizes: “Our relationships with many of the same non-profits continue as they find repeat value in our very personalized approach.” Much of his work also includes mentoring and working with younger professionals throughout Western North Carolina, providing both job opportunities and career advice.
Wilson holds a B.A. from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and an M.B.A. from Owen School, Vanderbilt University. Outside the office, Wilson is a Big Brother to Matthew (5 years) and is Convener of the French Broad River Greenway Committee. He enjoys family time, cycling, tennis, swimming, running, and cooking. |
Tracy Kunkler, Partner |
Tracy Kunkler, Partner at Sims & Steele Consulting, specializes in strategic and outcomes-based planning, proposal writing, board governance, and facilitation.
As the point person for Sims & Steele’s Green Team, Tracy guides non-profits, local governments, and businesses to optimize their roles in sustainable economic development and to successfully connect with funders and partners. Most recently, Tracy has been introducing organizations to Dynamic Governance: a set of practices and techniques designed to help groups reach their aims.
She is sought regionally for her seminars in grant writing and other topics and she leads workshops for the Duke Non-Profit Certificate Program, the South Carolina Association of Non-Profit Organizations (SCANPO), Eat Smart, Move More SC, and the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
Tracy joined Sims & Steele in 2008 after over 20 years progressive experience in the non-profit/government sectors. She received a Master’s in Social Work from the University of New England and is a graduate of UNC-A Leadership Asheville 20. Tracy’s career path has been varied, winding between a non-profit career focused on volunteer management, fundraising and grants (raising several million for community-based organizations); community organizing, planning/governance facilitation, and consensus decision-making. In addition to her work with non-profits, she has also taught yoga and lived for a time on an organic farm. |
Lee Brannock, Consultant |
Lee Brannock is a Sims & Steele Consultant with over 25 years of experience in writing federal, state, and private foundation grants for local government and non-profit agencies. She focuses on healthcare, children and family issues, education, substance abuse, and community development. Lee’s grantwriting success in the last ten years alone has brought close to $5 million to the Western North Carolina region for a wide range of projects and community needs.
Lee has also managed grant programs in higher education and other settings, including oversight of federally-funded and private foundation contracts, submitting programmatic and fiscal reports, and serving as a liaison with funding agencies and foundations.
Her education includes a B.A. in English from the State University of New York at Albany, training by the Grantsmanship Center, Research Associates, and the Duke University certificate program in non-profit management.

Ron Curran, Consultant |
Dr. Ron Curran brings over 30 years of administrative experience with non profits to Sims & Steele, offering interim Executive Director services, strategic planning with a focus on succession planning for administrative services, fundraising strategies, and organizational development in hard times. Dr. Curran has assisted non profits to become solvent and add additional services and also been involved with Sims & Steele as both a consultant and as the subject of their services and planning.
With a doctoral degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in Organizational Development, Dr. Curran’s dissertation focused on implementation of change in organizational culture. His administrative experience has involved leading multi-state non profits, teaching at the college level, and administering local non profit from near closure to solvent and highly recognized leadership it the field. Dr. Curran also hold two master’s degrees as well as a BA in Sociology.

Albert Gooch, Consultant |
Albert Gooch is a Consultant at Sims and Steele providing non-profit clients with strategic planning and both execution and planning for capital campaigns and annual funds.
Prior to joining S & S, Albert’s career focused on education and non-profit management. As Director of Admissions for the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of the South, Sewanee, TN, he kept this university among the nation’s highly competitive colleges through years of double digit inflation and declining numbers of high school seniors.
Later as president of Kanuga Conferences, Hendersonville, NC; the nation’s largest Episcopal conference center; he led a team effort to renovate its aging facility and created an endowment approaching $10 million. At Kanuga, he averaged $1,000,000 in gift income each year.
Albert has been board chairman of Flat Rock Playhouse, Christ School, and United Way. He is founding board chairman of the Moldova World Children’s Fund and was named Western North Carolina’s 1998 Outstanding Fund-Raising Executive. |
Steve Kallan, Consultant |
Steven Kallan is a Sims & Steele Consultant focusing on strategic planning, positioning and branding, financial analysis, and facilitation.
Steve is an operations and organization development professional with over thirty-five years experience in businesses, non-profits, and higher education. His sweet spot is working with clients during periods of start-up, growth and change. He has led program design and evaluation, planning, fundraising projects, as well as marketing, finance, human resources, and information systems efforts. Steve has served in senior corporate positions and non-profit executive and board roles.
A partner in helping organizations grow and prosper, Steve believes that the more non-profits use good, basic business principles, the more successful they will be. |
Jennifer McLean, Consultant |
Jennifer McLean is a Consultant at Sims and Steele specializing in strategic planning, proposal writing, and project management.
She brings fifteen years of experience as a project manager in environmental and sustainable development. As Growth Consultant for the U.S. Green Building Council, Jennifer worked with local chapters to promote and expand green building in the Southeast.
She holds an M.S. in Conservation and Sustainable Development from the University of Maryland and worked in policy and international aid in Washington, D.C. before going on to local conservation projects in several states. |
Michael Shelley, Consultant |
Mike Shelley is a Consultant for Sims & Steele specializing in strategic planning, fundraising, organizational evaluation and development. He’s a Western North Carolina native who graduated from the United States Naval Academy, then served as a Naval Officer afloat and ashore.
After earning a Masters Degree in Library Science at Emory University, he worked for 25 years at the Library of Congress in a variety of management and senior staff positions focusing on leadership, planning, and operations management.
Mike resides in Pisgah Forest, North Carolina, where he is active in community affairs and holds leadership positions on the boards of the Transylvania County Library and the Boys and Girls Club of Transylvania County. He and his wife have two children and five amazing grandchildren. |
